If I had more time, I would have devoured this volume in one sitting. The mystery of who Emily'south granddaddy really was, and how she would fifty-fifty be able to discover him, carried the story from get-go to stop. Nosotros got glimpses of what life was similar for her grandad, as well. (Let's merely say, the circumstances were heartbreaking.) Emily also had her ain issues, such equally dealing with the aftermath of her begetter'southward abandonment and the sacrifice she made for the 2 loves of her life.
Kristin has delivered another winner and I hope anybody gets a hazard to pick up this haunting story of redemption.

The story takes place during WWII and mod 24-hour interval. Nosotros flip amongst the stories with baited breath trying to figure out what happened to Peter Dahler. The story filled me with angst as many of the characters in the book are agape of love, expose, desertion and acted accordingly. Yet, it also warned my center. The biggest takeaways from the book are to tell people how you experience sooner rather than later on, always try to make things right, and to not surrender on true dearest.
Lesser line - when you find yourself reading a book while brushing your teeth, sitting at red lights, eating your lunch in your machine just then yous can end a book, you know it is expert. Loved it.

This was one of a similar genre.
Historical characters just like today. German soldiers who "disagreed with" Hitler's "ideology" and remained otherwise unsullied. Pretty much Jew-less Holocaust with universalized values of equality. Romanticized notion of love with your ane special somebody out in that location somewhere. Heroes or villains. Ability to hitting "undo" after xx, 20-five--or seventy--years. Implausible in multiple ways. Forgiveness as an obligation. Tearjerker.
Wait a minute. Is "tearjerker" a bad matter? Or, better, is this book similar a drug? or could at that place exist positive reasons information technology hooked me, above and beyond its flaws? Does it differ from the ones I abandoned, and, if then, how?
The author started out past making the young-lady protagonist a journalist in the context of the problems journalism is having today. The writer did a good chore with the nowadays. She wrote what she knew. Of course, the main thrust of the story doesn't accept much to do with character-every bit-journalist, simply the character does use phone, computer, the internet. The author writes very naturally of people living in today's world, whereas many books seem to exist prepare in an unchanged and imaginary nowadays. The author has some facility with characters living in the present.
And so at that place's the fact she set the action in Orlando, where my husband grew up, and in Atlanta and Decatur, where I did. That didn't injure. She fabricated up some of her specific locations and street names, only she got the interstates right, that is, bothered to do her research.
How almost the love stuff, though? Genre, maybe; canned, maybe. But there is Romeo and Juliet to be considered. This is Romeo and Juliet without the immediate denouement. Result: star-crossed lovers forever.
For what it's worth, this writer knows how to play on the tropes of Western civilization. The reader may or may non exist a full-fledged member of said Western civilization, may be "other" in some ways, I hateful, but the abode-grown reader (myself, I mean) has still been pickled in her culture and will answer as expected when the correct strings are plucked.
...Equally I wrote that, I was thinking "musical instrument," merely then I saw could exist "boob" too. I could lookout man myself dance as my strings were beingness pulled.
And so it is that this one I finished. I think it's fifty-fifty destined for a relative instead of the Little Gratis Library.
One final touch: this book reflects what I call The Thornbirds effect, meaning that characters are impregnated after having sex one fateful time -- here, for good measure, non but once just in ii generations.

I accept very mixed feelings near When We Meet Again past Kristin Harmel. A granddaughter receives an anonymous painting of what appears to be her grandmother, who has recently passed, with an unsigned notation essentially saying that her grandfather never forgot near her grandmother (who he abandoned), that she was the beloved of his life. The mystery surrounding the painting is interesting and engaging, and I did learn about German Pw(s) who were put to work every bit laborers in America during WW II.However, the dialogue of the characters, tells more it shows, and information technology is non believable. The main grapheme is 36 years former, merely her conversations make the reader think that she is much younger. Additionally, characters who have never met start revealing intimate, subconscious details of their family'southward history without any reservation or suspicion. The romance story-line was clichéd and sappy in parts. Farther, there was no existent credible caption of how a young southern woman came to be and then accepting of race and ethnicity during such an emotionally tumultuous time.
Historical fiction is tricky for an writer and his/her reading audience because the historical time frame, the behavior, mores and actual events, naturally limits the story as to plausibility. That beingness said, within parameters, I am willing to believe any story-line that the author puts forth every bit long as at that place is a convincing statement, well-developed characters, and a story that rings truthful, especially taking into account the historical time frame. I simply wasn't convinced. Conspicuously, I am in the minority every bit this novel is very highly reviewed and rated, merely ultimately I was disappointed.

...more thanAfter I finished this book the ane thing that I came away with was this: If you lot are e'er looking to the past, you can never move toward the fu Another beautifully written story past Kristin Harmel... :) It was so moving and touched me in a very personal way. Each fourth dimension I read a Kristin Harmel book I discover myself reflecting on the life wisdom that is very quietly laced within the pages. Her books are not merely stories, they are an opportunity to reflect on the things that are most important in life.
After I finished this book the i thing that I came abroad with was this: If yous are ever looking to the past, you can never move toward the future. The characters in this story, both past and present, were all running from the past while at the same fourth dimension holding on to lost dreams, lost loves and things that could never be inverse. By doing so, they were unable to truly alive in the present. There was always a pigsty in them that could not be filled.
The story moves back and forth from present to by as we follow the graphic symbol Emily. She is searching for data about a mysterious painting that shows upwards right after her grandmothers passing. The story behind the painting reveals a hush-hush to her grandmothers life during WWII when she lived in Florida and worked in the sugar cane fields.
While working in the fields, she meets a German language POW named Peter Dahler. He was immediately drawn to this beautiful American daughter named Margaret and they both cruel in dear. It was a bittersweet time because they both knew that they would somewhen be separated. After he is sent back to Germany when the war concluded, life spiraled into an uncertain direction and he was desperate to find a way back to both the woman and the state he brutal in love with during his time there.
I loved how the past lives of Margaret and Peter and then very closely mimicked the present lives of Emily and her father. All of them had fabricated unforgiveable mistakes, all of them guilty of running from a past of which they could never really let go. Emily'due south search for the story backside the painting was not just a search for her grandmother'due south history, it was also an opportunity for her to reverberate on her own life and the importance of forgiveness and letting get of the past.
I loved how this story reflected on how toxic it tin be for someone to hold on to detest and anger. Sometimes we accept to learn to forgive not merely the people who accept injure the states, just we must as well learn to forgive ourselves. In that location is so much power in letting become of things you cannot change and choosing to give people chances fifty-fifty when they don't deserve them.
This is a beautifully written story that is both inspiring and heartfelt. At that place is tragedy in the pages but besides triumph. The way the mistakes of those from the past became a salve for the present was truly inspiring and brought a few tears to my eyes.
Lovers of Historical Fiction volition definitely want to add this volume to their to read pile. It's original, heartfelt and will leave y'all in need of hug, or a glass of vino... or chocolate! Whatever makes y'all feel meliorate. :)

I was really taken past surprise when this author began writing about the past and the history that she brought up. I
This is my second read by this author and I thought it was just as great as the first one. I think if you lot loved The Life Intended, you will honey When We Meet Again. Both books take some similarities such as switching back and along between present time and some other time. With this volume, the writer wrote in both nowadays and past about more than one love story, but they were connected.I was really taken by surprise when this author began writing about the past and the history that she brought up. I had absolutely no idea virtually the German POW internment camps in the Usa. When I went to "fact bank check" this information (not that I didn't believe the writer, but I was very curious), I discovered that my habitation boondocks even had billet for the POWs who came from another internment camp to do field work. That piece of history was really something I got lost in and had to remind myself that I could go back to it when I wasn't reading the book.
Emily was a likable character, but I did desire to milkshake her and tell her to get on with her life. As a 30-something year old adult female, she needed to hash out some things from her past so that she could at her happiest. She wasn't dissimilar many unmarried women today who were simply let go at their jobs, but she had been dealt more than her off-white share of losses. As she traveled effectually to become to the bottom of who sent the painting, I was glad to see her grow and open her mind up more to accepting that things tin can change.
Moving into the past and reading virtually when Emily'southward grandmother Margaret met the just dearest of her life Peter, I got defenseless up in their beloved story. Information technology was not like some cheesy wartime romance where boy meets girl and promises her he'll be back and asks her to look for him, but he gets killed in battle. The love between Margaret and Peter was mostly forbidden, yet I could experience the intensity of information technology all coming off the pages. I needed to go on reading to discover out what happened between them. How did two people who loved each other so much, end up equally they did?
When everything came together in the end, I was rather impressed that what I expected to happen, didn't exactly happen that manner. I, of course, cried both tears of joy and sadness. I can't wait for others to read this book when information technology hits the shelves, because I think all types of readers volition discover it enjoyable. I feel very fortunate that I was given the opportunity to read this book in advance and then that others will know it'south one to pick up. I don't even have to think hard about giving it 5 stars.

It has a lot of clichés about love and the connectedness between lovers or family members. Kitch lovers will beloved this book very much. I'm on the other hand, not one of those.
The heroine of the story is Emily who remains solitary in the world. Her mother died, and her father abandoned her when she was a child. She is not in close contact with her father for whom she is furious. Emily was very attached to her grandmother Margaret, and now she too died. Besides, she fired from her job.
A co-worker calls her and gives her a package sent to her sometime office. Attached to the box is a drawing of a woman in a blood-red dress in a cornfield. The painting is accompanied by a letter that reads: "Your grandfather never stopped loving her." Emily decides to proceed a journeying and detect the missing details. She flew to Munich, then to Florida and returned to Atlanta, where she was a child. On her long trip, she discovers a family story related to her grandmother and a German soldier who was a captive prisoner in Florida after the autumn of Federal republic of germany. The story was kept secret by her grandmother, and her father besides knew nothing. Likewise, mysteries too arise in Emily's life. An act she had done years ago for which she had been sorry all her life and was at present total of guilt.
Thanks to the volume I exposed to the fact that I did non know virtually the beingness of POW camps throughout the United States (during Globe War II). German soldiers who taken captive employed in the USA in various agricultural work. They even received wages for their work, and some cruel in love with American life and returned after the war to alive there.
It is recommended to read.
